What Is Turf Toe?

Turf toe is a sprain of the ligaments surrounding the big toe joint, typically occurring in athletes who play on artificial turf, though it can affect anyone engaged in activities that involve pushing off the big toe forcefully. Turf toe is usually caused by repetitive hyperextension of the big toe, often when an athlete  or dancer pushes off the ground. The injury is classified into three grades. Grade 1 involves mild stretching of the ligaments, causing minor pain and swelling. Grade 2 includes partial tearing, leading to moderate pain, bruising, and difficulty in movement. Grade 3 is a complete tear, resulting in severe pain, significant swelling, and joint instability. Symptoms of turf toe include pain, swelling, and limited range of motion in the big toe. Diagnosis is made through a physical exam and imaging studies like X-rays. Treatment varies by grade, ranging from rest for milder cases to immobilization or surgery for severe injuries.   • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Exercises for Healthier Feet

Regular foot exercises are essential for maintaining healthy feet, improving circulation, and enhancing flexibility in the feet, ankles, and calves. Start with circulation stretches while seated, by flexing and pointing your toes, moving them side to side, and rotating them in circles. Perform 10 repetitions on each side. Next, the towel foot stretch targets your calf and foot muscles. Sit on the floor, wrap a towel around the bottom of your foot, and use it to flex and point your toes against resistance. For a deeper stretch, bend your knee outward and pull your foot toward you. Repeat 10 times on each side. Lastly, try the calf and foot stretch. Lie on your back with your knees bent, loop a towel around your foot, and gently pull it toward you while keeping your knee slightly bent. Hold this stretch for 20 seconds on each side. Regularly practicing these foot exercises can significantly benefit your foot health. What Are Plantar Warts?

Plantar warts, caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, are growths that appear on the soles of the feet. These warts thrive in warm, moist environments like public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools, making them easy to contract in such places. The virus enters the skin through small cuts or abrasions, leading to the development of warts that can be painful and unsightly. Symptoms include rough, grainy lesions on the soles of the feet, often with black pinpoints, which are tiny blood vessels. Plantar warts can cause discomfort, especially while walking or standing for extended periods. Relief options can include salicylic acid, cryotherapy, freezing the wart, or laser therapy. Maintaining good foot hygiene and wearing protective footwear in public areas may help to prevent plantar warts. If you think you have a plantar wart and mild treatments are ineffective or the wart is particularly painful, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist to ensure proper care.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into.
